8196.- Rotary International y Mandela.

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead." — Nelson Mandela.

He will be missed. He made the difference in the lives of many, including those of the children in Africa who did not get the incurable and often crippling disease of ‪#‎polio‬.

In 1996, some mainly Muslim African nations banned polio immunizations. Past RI President Herb Brown flew to South Africa to plead with that country's president, Nelson Mandela, for assistance.

Mandela called a press conference, with Brown at his side, and told the gathered reporters, "I am asking right now that the president of every country in Africa open their doors to allow Rotary, UNICEF, and WHO to make Africa polio-free. We in South Africa can already attest to the value of this program and South Africa is now polio-free. I ask that each president do the same for their children as we have done for ours."

Almost immediately, Africa once again put out the welcome mat for polio immunizations. In 1997, Nelson Mandela received the ‪#‎Rotary‬Award for World Understanding.
